Sallie is a volunteer who has been reading for Virginia Voice for over 25 years! She currently reads the weekly programs “Green Thumb” and “Advice/Horoscopes/TV listings.”

What brought you to Virginia Voice?

I first came to Virginia Voice after being a reader for a visually impaired woman who needed help with specialized career material.  When she no longer needed me, I just naturally moved on over to Virginia Voice!

How long have you been volunteering with Virginia Voice?

I’ve been volunteering for over 25 years but I did have to take several years off during and after a bout with cancer.  Radiation took a great toll on my voice and it took a while to build it back up.

What do you read for Virginia Voice?

I have read a variety of materials for Virginia Voice but at present I read Green Thumb and frequently horoscopes, advice and TV listings.

How do you describe your work with Virginia Voice to your friends and family?

I call their attention to the fact that there are many people who are visually impaired and that Virginia voice serves a very important need within our community.

Do you have a favorite memory or story from your time volunteering with Virginia Voice?

Some of my favorite memories are of meeting our listeners and being struck by how readily they recognize us by the sound of our voices.

Do you volunteer anywhere else in the community? Where, and in what capacity?

I am also a volunteer Patient Advocate at St. Mary’s Hospital.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not volunteering?

I enjoy reading (what a surprise!) and spending time with friends and family.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I can’t think of anything that someone would be surprised to find out about me. I’m pretty much an open book!
