Experience Richmond through sound: Virginia Voice connects people with vision loss to the stories, events, and moments that make our community vibrant.
In its November edition, Richmond Magazine profiles Virginia Voice and its mission to amplify access and connection for the visually impaired by transforming the way they experience news, culture and community. Through live audio descriptions at events, a 24/7 radio-reading service, and freely-loaned receivers and smart-speaker access, Virginia Voice ensures listeners aren’t left out of the game when the lights go down or the crowd goes wild — they hear it all.
“Every person, regardless of ability, should have access to everything.”
– CEO Yvonne Mastromano
Founded in 1978 and powered by over 150 dedicated volunteers, the organization goes beyond mere narration to paint vivid scenes of ball-games, theatre and other outings. CEO Yvonne Mastromano explains the mission this way: “Every person, regardless of ability, should have access to everything.”
From volunteers describing hot-dog-throwing mascots to loaning pre-tuned earpieces, Virginia Voice makes community engagement inclusive and vibrant — helping people who are blind or visually impaired stay active, informed and connected.
