Heath is currently working on her second book, a group biography entitled The Reluctant Sorority: a True Story of Survival and Rescue from the Homefront about the courageous wives of officers who were Prisoners of War or Missing in Action during the Vietnam War. Howard Owen

The Bottom - Howard OwnHoward Owen’s 44 years in journalism include reporting and editing stints at the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the (Fredericksburg) Free-Lance Star. He’s also known for his 14 novels, the last four of which are set in right here in Richmond. “The Bottom” is the fourth in Owen’s Willie Black mystery series.

Lou Dean talks to Owen about the motivation behind the Willie Black character, hints about the many familiar Richmond locations showcased in the series and insight into the state of the newspaper business today. Owen also reads an excerpt from “The Bottom” – a true literary treat.

Owen’s next Willie Black novel, “Grace,” will be released in October.  The sixth in the series, “The Devil’s Triangle, will be published in 2017.

Published in 2011, Silver Sparrow is a story about a man’s deception, a family’s complicity, and two teenage girls caught in the middle. Library Journal , O MagazineSlate and Salon all selected the novel among the best of the year.  In addition to being chosen by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association as an Honor Book, Silver Sparrow was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and the 2013 IMPAC Dublin International Literary Award. Captain Jim Gordon – Successful Life Sailing

Captain Jim GordonCaptain Jim Gordon, author of the upcoming book Who Let the Crabs Out? Navigating the Waters of Life, read six books a week as a child and wrote poetry as a teenager. Although he was born and raised in Richmond, the Chesapeake Bay was a huge influence on his life. He now lives on the Bay, in a cottage he designed on the family farm.

During his 30 years of public speaking and training, Captain Jim coached executives, medical professionals, attorneys, therapists and sales specialists.  In addition, he is a licensed, private for-hire captain and an accomplished author.
