SPECIAL PROGRAMMING CELEBRATES 30 YEARS
To celebrate 30 years of serving Central Virginia and Hampton Roads, Virginia Voice is producing some very special programming. We launched our celebration with the airing of a new series called "The Writer's Voice." We invited noted writers from the area to visit our studios and talk with us on-air about their work. As part of their over-the-air sharing, each of the interviewees very kindly read a selection from his or her own writings.

We began the series by inviting a number of writers and executives from the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" to join us in the studio. We had wonderful visits in our studios with Times-Dispatch staffers – President and Publisher Tom Silvestri, Vice President/Executive Editor Glenn Proctor, columnists Bill Lohmann, Paul Woody, Jeff Shapiro and Michael Paul Williams; and staff writers Rex Springston, Peter Bacqué, Wes Hester, Ellen Robertson and Katherine Calos.

The editor of the "Henrico Citizen," Tom Lappas, joined us to read a piece he had written about the closing of the schools in Prince Edward County and its effect on one young woman who then studied in Henrico County.

We also talked with nationally-recognized authors who live in Richmond or who have close ties to the city. These included author David L. Robbins, who read from his newest book "Broken Jewel," Dr. John Kukla who read from his books "Mr. Jefferson's Women" and "A Wilderness So Immense" and Dr. Hal Poe, chairman of the board of the Poe Museum in Richmond and author of the Edgar award-winning "Edgar Allan Poe: An Illustrated Companion to His Tell-Tale Stories."

These entertaining and revealing programs, hosted by Patty Campbell, were aired on Virginia Voice this fall, and are now accessible on our Web site, www.virginiavoice.org. Simply click on "The Writer's Voice" on the home page.

As new programs in this special series are produced, they will air on Virginia Voice on Sunday evenings and will also be made available on our Web site.

We will continue our celebration of 30 years of service with several other new programs that are currently under development. In the spring, we're planning to invite a number of influential community leaders from business, politics, education and the non-profit sector to visit our studios, talk about their work in the community and take part in some of the on-air reading that Virginia Voice provides 365 days of the year. So stay tuned to our broadcasts or check our Web site to find out what's new and join us as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary!

NOTE: There are five photographs on the page: Patty Campbell interviewing Katherine Calos; Patty Campbell interviewing Tom Silvestri; Michael Paul Williams; David L. Robbins; Hal Poe.

RICHMOND CITY COUNCIL COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of the United States of America, Commonwealth of Virginia, Code of Virginia and Richmond City Charter: Richmond City Council, as the governing body of the City of Richmond, does hereby and officially recognize Virginia Voice

Richmond City Council does hereby officially honor and recognize the Richmond-based nonprofit organization, Virginia Voice, for nearly thirty years of providing free services to people who are blind, vision impaired, or otherwise print challenged due to a disability.

Established in 1979, Virginia Voice is dedicated to helping people keep connected to society by providing access to printed news and information through the translation, recording and broadcast of the printed word into spoken word. Individuals using the services of Virginia Voice range in age from 10 to 105, with an estimated 58 percent over the age of 70.

Serving more than 1,700 print challenged individuals daily in the 40-mile Metro-Richmond Area directly through closed-circuit radio broadcast, Virginia Voice is also available state-wide, nationally and internationally through digitally recorded internet-based audio files that are freely available and accessed from their website; and through closed-circuit radio rebroadcasts in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Supported by individual donations, organizations and grants, Virginia Voice has more than 200 volunteers who read daily newspapers, magazines, books, newsletters, and assistive publications from organizations providing services to people with disabilities.

Richmond City Council is therefore proud to officially honor, celebrate and bestow the Richmond City Council Community Service Award on Virginia Voice for their dedication to our print challenged community and brings their tremendously important service to the attention of all our grateful citizens.

Given under our hand and presented this 9th day of November, 2009, in the two-hundred twenty-eighth year of the City of Richmond, in the two hundred thirty-fourth year of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States of America.

Signatures:
The Honorable Kathy Graziana, President, Richmond City Council, Councilwoman, Southwest 4th District
The Honorable Reva M. Trammell, Councilwoman, Southside 8th District, Richmond City Council
The Honorable E. Martin Jewell, Councilman, Central 5th District, Richmond City Council

REMEMBER VIRGINIA VOICE IN PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
When you are planning your future giving, please remember Virginia Voice. Please give some thought, as well, to putting Virginia Voice in your will. Adding Virginia Voice to a will that is already written is a simple procedure. Your lawyer can help with this, or give us a call at 266-2477, and we can help with the appropriate language. Thank you for considering this opportunity to help with ensuring the continued provision of this important service.

GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH CONTINUES BENEFIT PROGRAM
For a number of years, Gethsemane Baptist Church in King William has hosted a Virginia Voice Benefit Program in honor of church member and Virginia Voice listener, Walter E. (Ed) Jones. Annually, on the third Sunday in September, Gethsemane , in partnership with several area churches, hosts an afternoon of inspirational song, music and sharing that warms the heart and soul of everyone in attendance. This year's speaker was Fred Danz, 20-year veteran volunteer for Virginia Voice. Contributions to Virginia Voice in connection with this year's Benefit Program totaled $1,437.00!'

THANKS TO OUR BROADCAST PARTNERS
We are grateful to the good folks at 88.9 FM WCVE, Richmond's public radio station, for donating to Virginia Voice the use of their subcarrier to enable us to broadcast our programming throughout the Central Virginia area. Our use of the frequency of WCVE provides the means for us to broadcast by way of the special radios that we issue on a loan basis to applicants for our service.

We are also grateful to Norfolk's public radio station, WHRO-FM, for carrying our daily programming over their subcarrier throughout the Hampton Roads area by way of our sister audio reading and information service, the WHRO Voice.

We also thank our friends at The Metropolitan Washington Ear, our sister audio reading and information service headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, for the provision of space on their dial-in system for our daily reading of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. By way of this toll-free dial-in service, print disabled individuals throughout the state have a means for accessing, at any time of their choosing, our daily reading of The Times-Dispatch.
